Organizational Culture Of The Nfl - 1037 Words

The organizational culture of the NFL was a breeding ground for dysfunction. From the lack of strong ethics to leadership accountability to inconsistencies, the NFL has many challenges to overcome. The first remedy for the NFL’s woes would be an organizational change in values. This would mean a paradigm shift to an ethical organizational culture. It will be imperative to consider the team owners and players â€Å"Until new behaviors are rooted in social norms and shared values, they are subject to degradation as soon as the pressure for change is removed† (Kotter, 2007). PMI notes five change enablers that when incorporated into strategic change initiatives a have a high rate of success. †¢ Having well-defined milestones and metrics †¢ Having senior management committed to change †¢ Establishing and communicating concrete ownership and accountability †¢ Using standardized project management practices †¢ Having engaged executive sponsors (Cabrey Haughey, 2014) When it comes to key performance indicators, Cabrey Haughey (2014) note three metrics that are customarily used. Those metrics are customer satisfaction, cost reduction, and sales and/or profits. A fourth metric that is often used is employee morale. To measure the success of its change initiative, the league must measure the satisfaction of its fans, whether or not it is saving money on its legal issues, and whether or not ticket sales are increasing. Gang Violence Free Essays

Teen Gang Violence If I could change the world, I would definitely leave out the gang violence. I wonder why teens join gangs. I’ve seen some of my friends join gangs and I wonder why they joined. We will write a custom essay sample on Gang Violence or any similar topic only for you Order Now Did they think they were going to be famous? Did they think everyone was going to know them now and want to invite them to special events? Or did they want to sell drugs on their block and become hood rich? I grew up in the city of Blytheville, Arkansas, where a lot of kids find trouble. Gangs are becoming a growing problem in American society. More young people are turning to gangs to solve problems in their lives. When youth join gangs, they forget about their family, real friends, and even school. In Blytheville, gangs cause teenagers to act violently. When you are in a gang, you also have rival gangs that you constantly have to fight, just because you don’t want another gang in your territory. Some teens think that being in a gang will give them protection. I believe being in a gang increases your chances of being killed or hurt badly. Besides the violence that is involved in being in a gang, teens also get involved in illegal activities such as the use and selling of drugs. Gangs make you carry out illegal activities to make money. One of these activities is selling marijuana mainly. In my city, some members are big time dealers, while others just work the corners. It’s a part in my town that does a lot of killing and selling drugs. That is not good role modeling for the young people. In what shouldn’t surprise anyone who has thought even the least bit about these sorts of issues, a lack of positive role models in their lives is  leading to gang membership. (ParentDish) Some children probably grew up where they saw people selling drugs and killing. They said, â€Å"When I get older I want to be just like that†. When you’re young you don’t really know the consequences of being in a gang. I never understood the meaning of gangs. You have to have tons of people who might have your back, but the key word was â€Å"might†. I know many people that don’t need to be in a gang. They’re in it just to fit in. That is just horrible in my book. I remember we had to read a book about gangs in high school. This book was called Gangs, Groups, Cults. It’s about a kid name Donte. He was a bright teenager who finished school and didn’t do anything after high school. So he oined a gang because he said, â€Å"Cool, but what do I do once I get out of school? You know? I did my daily deed to keep from getting thrown out of the house, but no I’m walking around the neighborhood and I don’t have anything to do† (Bradley 75). Since Donte had nothing better to do, he figured that it would be okay to join a gang. Boredom causes teenagers to join gangs, as well as wrecking havoc in the streets. Boredom can cause teens to join gangs, and so does bad parents. A lot of times when a kid’s family is messed up, they end up spending more time on the streets, and the gang becomes like their second family. Maybe they only have a mom and she has drug problems, or is never around or very strict on him/her. Maybe they have a dad that is never around, or is on drugs. Some kids suffer through home life with parents who are always drunk on alcohol and they don’t really know their parents. So they meet older gang members that give them money and make them feel like a little brother or even a son. According to The National Gang Center and The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, boys are more involved in gangs than girls; however you might be surprised to find out that the number of female gang members is rapidly increasing. Psychology Today) Many parents of teenage girls do not consider gang activity to be something they should worry about very much. Unfortunately, I’ve witness teenage girls getting more and more involved in gangs. Not only in Blytheville, this is occurring in the larger cities, and other smaller cities and towns as well. Gangs rely on their gi rl for many dangerous activities that can result in teen girls going to prison or worse. Maybe they believe she want get as much time for a crime as a male would. Teens that are in gangs are much more likely to suffer from gun violence, whether it’s injury or death. As a gang member, you can look forward to at least one shooting. In some cities, many teens that were killed by guns are gang members. Most likely, they were shooting at other gang members, who will not hesitate to shoot back. According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, youth gangs have about 772,000 members nationwide, with half of them being teens under 18. (eHow) Teenagers love this life because they feel powerful, rich, and respected at a young age. They think they’re going to become rich and gang famous. The older guys that are or were in a gang are known as â€Å"OG’s†, know the opposite. I’m pretty sure they’re regretting everything like the choices they made getting into the gang in the first place back in the day. A lot of OG’s have spent their whole lives in and out of jail, and are out on the street asking for money, all because the gang life took away a lot of opportunities they could have had when they were younger. The world doesn’t need this kind of activity going on. We have bigger problems to deal with, other than killing and harming each other. Parents need to tell their children how much they love them each and every day. How to cite Gang Violence, Essay examples

Adolescent Drug use Essay Example For Students

Adolescent Drug use Essay Adolescent Drug AbuseCrack, booze, pot, crystal- from the inner city to the suburbs to small towns, the world of the adolescent is filled with drugs. When a little harmless experimentation becomes addiction, parents, teachers, and society are often at a loss. For this age group (roughly ages 13 to 23), traditional substance abuse programs simply are not enough (Nowinski, inside cover). Todays society provides many challenges for adolescents that our parents rarely had to face. Pre-marital sex and pregnancy, alcohol abuse, and drug addiction have always been around but they have never been more of a problem to adolescents than they are now. Adolescents are on their own to take care of themselves with more and more single parent households. The problem of drug and alcohol is a major one. Teenagers feel a need to drink and do drugs to fit in to peer groups. The problem is spreading rapidly. The common thought is that drugs are only in the big city or where the poor live but that is wrong. Any person can get drugs from the huge highly populated city to the small less populated towns of Texas and Nebraska. It doesnt matter where you are. There is a major need for adults to intervene and stop the problem at its beginnings, adolescents. If we sit here and deny the fact that the problem is there then we are just setting ourselves up for disaster. The first source that I used for my research was a book written by Dr. Joseph Nowinski entitled Substance Abuse in Adolescents Young Adults. It was written at the Elmcrest Psychiatric Institute in 1990. The book described Dr. Nowinskis study of adolescent addicts of drugs and alcohol. It goes on to explain the need for the development of treatment plans for adolescents because conventional plans do not work on this age group. The second source that I used was a journal article entitled Prevalence of substance abuse in a rural teenage population. It was written by Wade Silverman. This article was published in The Journal of Adolescent Chemical Dependency in 1991. This article presented the results of a survey done in a rural school system to assess the prevalence rates of substance use and related lifestyle variables for teens and their parents. The third source that I used was a newspaper article taken from the February 1, 1994 edition of the Los Angeles Times. The piece was written by Marlene Cimons. The article, entitled Illicit drug use by youths shows marked increases, announced that the results of an annual survey showed that drug use had increased significantly among teenagers between 1992 and 1993 and has continued to consistently rise since then. My fourth source was a journal article written by S. Brown and others. It was taken from The Journal of Studies on Alcohol. The article was entitled Conduct disorder among adolescent alcohol and drug abusers and was published in1996. The article summarized a study that examined the extent to which conduct disorder type behavior predated substance use involvement among 166 adolescents in treatment for alcohol and other drug abuse. My final source was another journal article that was taken from The Journal of Marital and family Therapy. The article was written by H. Joanning and others in 1992. The article, entitled Treating adolescent drug abuse: A comparison of family systems therapy, group therapy, and family drug education, describes the differential effectiveness of three models of adolescent drug abuse treatment. It compares the Family Systems Therapy, the Adolescent Group Therapy, and the Family Drug Education models. Dr. Nowinskis book describes specific cases of adolescent drug abuse that he has worked with. He describes the different patterns of drug abuse and the causes of such abuse. He describes causes like alienation, low self- esteem and confidence, stress, and peer pressure. He goes into how developments of new treatment techniques are necessary because adolescent addictions are different than those of adults. He describes the process of counseling, denial and compliance, and surrender and recovery. Nowinski stresses the need for family intervention in cases that involve adolescents. Silverman gives the results of the survey and attempts to interpret the results. It was found that 83% of the students in the study were either abstainers or experimental users. It was recommended that primary prevention strategies should be used with this group. The remaining 17% had been deemed drug users and it was found that they all shared a similar lifestyle. All had multiple substance abuse problems, w ere engaged in frequent sexual activity, and received poor grades. It was also found that the amount of parental attention and supervision was significantly different for both groups. The article of my third source states that the rise in drug use among teens was driven by a dramatic rise in the use of marijuana and more use of stimulants, LSD and inhalants. It also describes how this trend was a reversal from the recent downward patterns of drug use among teens. In my fourth source it was found that most cases of alcohol and drug abuse in adolescents are attributed to conduct disorder behavior. It was also found that cases involving this disorder and drug abuse led to a more frequent relapse into the problem and an increase in anti-social behavior. The study in my fifth source found that the Family Therapy Systems model of treatment appeared to be more effective in treating and stopping adolescent drug abuse. It registered twice as many drug-free clients as the Family Drug Educatio n program and three times as many as the Adolescent Group Therapy model. .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 , .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .postImageUrl , .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 , .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:hover , .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:visited , .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:active { border:0!important; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:active , .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28 .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub49f25d985b5c1ff2bb8b76f389a1d28:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Benin EssayLooking at the statistics it is obvious that drug and alcohol abuse among adolescents is a prevalent and dangerous problem. Why I started drawing Essay Example For Students

Why I started drawing Essay The smell of vet paint, pencil shavings, and dried Elms glue rushed over me while I scanned the area for any possible friends. My eyes stopped at the class clown, Christian, sticking two crayons up his nose, ensuing the laughter Of a few other students. Next to him was Barbarian sitting quietly at the table fiddling with her pigtails. She was the closest person to a friend that I had there, and so With heavy feet dragging, made my way to sit in the blue plastic chair next to her, and waited for class to begin. Good afternoon, everyone. The room once filled with chatter and laughter fell silent instantaneously as misplaced children scrambled the room to find open seats. A tall, bald man with a speckled grey goatee walked into the room and sat at the edge of his desk pressing his hands firmly on the ends to keep his balance. My name is Mr.. Kefir. Id like to welcome you to art. Hopefully, if I do my job correctly at the end of the year youll leave this classroom an artist. He laughed, stood up, and handed everyone a white piece of blank paper and asked us all to take our time, and draw what makes us the happiest. We will write a custom essay on Why I started drawing specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now I sat there staring at my paper tort what felt like forever. Decided to peek over at Barbarians paper, and saw her in the process of drawing a cartoon horse with a pink crayon. Mr.. Kefir crouched down next to me, smiled, and asked me to close my eyes and think of my favorite place to be. My mind instantly imagined the thought of the tree house in my backyard. I picked my pencil up and began to drank Before knew it the bell had rang, sounds of zippers, and scooting chairs filled the room. Once again the mom began to buzz as people left for their next class. Looking at my finished paper caused a chain reaction to go off in my brain. Sparks of excitement and wonder filled my head as absorbed What I had created in that short span Of time. With a led *2 pencil, I had translated an image of my backyard onto this sheet of paper before me. Chuckled to myself in complete excitement before handing y paper to Mr.. Kefir. That afternoon as my mother picked my sister and up from school, ran up the stairs to my room and grabbed the first crumpled paper that I found in my floor, smoothed out the corners with my fingers and began to draw. I continued making lines that would curve, swirl, and zigzag all throughout until there wasnt a single corner or space available to draw on the paper. Graphite, and eraser shavings were scattered all over my desk by dinner, That following day in art, Mr.. Kefir complimented me on my drawing towards the end to class. You have talent, and it you dont mind, Id like to show it off by entering your drawing into the art contest at the middle school. He spoke so full of confidence, his smile caused his eyes to faintly crinkle at each end. Hadnt thought much about other people viewing my art before. I was always accustomed to having just my teacher or parents as the lone audience to whatever it was that had created. I agreed to his request and continued on to my next class. To my surprise, a week later had found out that placed first in the contest. Joy ran throughout my entire body, never would hue thought that meeting had resisted so strongly about could become the one thing that had turned into my own personal escape. I even entered some Of my work into a few different contests, and showings here and there. Didnt win them all, but the feeling of completing a piece of art and improving the way that I draw was the best part of it all. It was the summer before 9th grade when had decided to take a hiatus on my artwork to focus on making friends and trying out at different subjects for classes like history, and science. Deep into the school year one day, had found myself in the middle of history subconsciously drawing random sketches all over the empty spaces on my notes, would curve the end of my pencil in continuous motion until the led had worn down to nothing but a stub. My hands knew something that my mind hadnt, went home that evening, and unwrapped a brand new canvas. The fresh, all too tamari smell tilled the room as cracked my aunt bottles open and began making light strokes with a small brush. A few hours pass by before I finish. The image of a lush grassy hill filled with flowers, trees, and clouds fill my canvas, My hands are once again covered in paint; stare at them for a while before realize that havent seen them this way in almost 6 months, yet, they still oeuvre able to add detail, and portray personality throughout the entire piece. Had decided that I would go back to taking art classes. I continued taking science all through high school as well, I thought of my first art teacher, Mr.. Kefir, and the influence and encouragement that he had bestowed on me to believe in myself, and all the things that I could do. From that encouragement, have become the person that I am today. I always know that I cannot ever give up on something, even if fail the first time, and I have also learned to try the hardest the thing that scares me the most in this world, because that could very well be my biggest achievement yet. I take this knowledge with me to this day; now that am in college its the biggest advice that can give. I may major in science, but I continue to draw for myself.

An Overview of Gentrification

An Overview of Gentrification Gentrification is defined as the process by which wealthier (mostly middle-income) people move into, renovate, and restore housing and sometimes businesses in inner cities or other deteriorated areas formerly home to poorer people. As such, gentrification affects an areas demographics because this increase in middle-income individuals and families often results in an overall decline in racial minorities. Additionally, household size decreases because low-income families are replaced by young single people and couples desiring to be closer to their jobs and activities in the urban core. The real estate market also changes when gentrification occurs because increases in rents and home prices increase evictions. Once this happens rental units are often switched to condominiums or luxury housing available for purchase. As real estate changes, land use is also altered. Prior to gentrification these areas usually consist of low-income housing and sometimes light industry. After, there is still housing but it is usually high end, along with offices, retail, restaurants, and other forms of entertainment. Finally, because of these changes, gentrification significantly affects an area’s culture and character, making gentrification a controversial process. History and Causes of Gentrification Since Glass came up with the term, there have been numerous attempts to explain why gentrification occurs. Some of the earliest attempts to explain it are through the production- and consumption-side theories. Production-side theory is associated with a geographer, Neil Smith, who explains gentrification based on the relationship between money and production. Smith said that low rents in suburban areas after World War II led to a movement of capital into those areas as opposed to inner cities. As a result, urban areas were abandoned and land value there decreased while land value in the suburbs increased. Smith then came up with his rent-gap theory and used it to explain the process of gentrification. The rent-gap theory itself describes the inequality between the price of land at its current use and the potential price a piece of land could attain under a â€Å"higher and better use.† Using his theory, Smith argued that when the rent-gap was large enough, developers would see the potential profit in redeveloping inner-city areas. The profit attained by redevelopment in these areas closes the rent-gap, leading to higher rents, leases, and mortgages. Thus, the increase in profits associated with Smith’s theory leads to gentrification. The consumption-side theory, professed by geographer David Ley, looks at the characteristics of people performing gentrification and what they consume as opposed to the market to explain gentrification. It is said that these people perform advanced services (for example they are doctors and/or lawyers), enjoy arts and leisure, and demand amenities and are concerned with aesthetics in their cities. Gentrification allows such changes to occur and caters to this population. The Process of Gentrification Over time, these urban pioneers help to redevelop and â€Å"fix-up† run down areas. After doing so, prices go up and the lower income people present there are priced out and replaced with middle and upper-income people. These people then demand greater amenities and housing stock and businesses change to cater to them, again raising prices. These rising prices then force out the remaining population of lower income people and more middle and upper-income people are attracted, perpetuating the cycle of gentrification. Costs and Benefits of Gentrification The largest criticism of gentrification though is its displacement of the redeveloped area’s original inhabitants. Since gentrified areas are often in the run-down urban core, lower-income residents are eventually priced out and are sometimes left with no place to go. In addition, retail chains, services, and social networks are also priced out and replaced with higher-end retail and services. It is this aspect of gentrification that causes the most tension between residents and developers. Despite these criticisms though, there are several benefits to gentrification. Because it often leads to people owning their homes instead of renting, it can sometimes lead to more stability for the local area. It also creates an increased demand for housing so there is less vacant property. Finally, supporters of gentrification say that because of the increased presence of residents in the downtown, businesses there benefit because there are more people spending in the area. Whether it is viewed as positive or negative, however, there is no doubt that gentrified areas are becoming important parts of the fabric of cities worldwide.

America's Rise as a World Power from 1865-1898 Essay

America's Rise as a World Power from 1865-1898 - Essay Example Additionally, America signed treaties for trade with nations like France, a sign that shows the increase in trade relations, which also increased economic growth. The economic expansion of America to other countries is also another factor that contributed to its rise as a world power. The idea of expansion of trade internationally was started by William Seward with the help of other individuals. This was an advantage to America because the expansion and colonization of other nation increased the accessibility of raw materials for industrial purposes. With the availability of raw materials, industries expanded so did the economy. Moreover, American products were sold outside the country, which was because of the expansion of industries due to the industrial revolution. With the availability of surplus products in the market, America expanded its businesses to other countries. Additionally, the country made investments in other countries, which ensured that raw materials were available for industrial use, for example, America invested in oil fields in Mexico. The investment and expansion of America’s business to other nations was an advan tage to them because of the availability of cheap labor. Efficient communications that were invented helped increase trade within different nations. With the increase in trade because of the production of many products, America raised its status to one of the powerful nations. Coalitions of America with other nation for military, trade and industrial benefit is another contributing factor to its rise as a world power. England and America come together as trading partners after solving their differences that had aroused from the enmity they had because of San Juan Islands. Relations with other big nations like German and Russia was improved by German agreements to give islands of dispute to the Americans. Russians is seen to have sold Alaska to America. With the expansion of America beyond the Pacific, its economic power increased which also lead to its rise as a super power. America growth as to power was also contributed by the expansion of its military. They considered the expansion of the military because of involvement in trade and investments in other nations. Additionally, they also had to consider expansion done by other countries on their military system and follow suit. With the support of the idea of military expansion by Alfred Mahan, who argued that military expansion could guarantee Americans safety of their businesses, America’s economy could also be increased by a growth of the military. With the idea of Alfred, America was to build a military system and navy inclusive of stations throughout the world. This would ensure them the takeover of the world as a superpower. Events that led to Spanish War of 1898 Before the Spanish war of 1898, Cubans were in the hands of Spanish colonists and they tried to free themselves from the colonists. With the idea of getting independence from the Spanish, they revolted against the Spanish using guerilla war tactics. The Cuban uprising against the Spanish failed, which prompted the Spanish to impound the lager Cuban population and put them in one location, a situation that lead to a humanitarian crisis. This is because the location that the Cubans were detained made them easily exposed to diseases and malnutrition. America saw these situations

Alchemy and Remedy in Higher Education Research Paper

Alchemy and Remedy in Higher Education - Research Paper Example Research shows that the utility and validity of projective tests are lower than objective tests because some are more time to consume in comparison to the objective tests. Sexology tests have a limited number of receptions. This field provides different methods of psychological evaluations to examine various aspects of dysfunction, problems or discomforts (Kline 2005). The tests give less regard to consuming relationships and hence have a very low validity and utility level. Most of the sexology tests are written through questionnaires while a few of them are delivered orally. Neuropsychological tests on children and adolescents help them to evaluate their various levels of performance and to determine the regions that may show some conditions of mental impairment (Kline 2005). The tests are performed to these individuals after any brain injury, organic neurological problems or brain damage. They can also help to show development delays or learning disabilities in children (The American Psychological Association 1999). Due to their performance, their validity and utility are in continuous growth as many people continue to growing concern on their children’s’ health now and future. Different theories of adult learning have been derived to help improve the efforts of theorists and practitioners in understanding adult learning. The theories provide better ways in workable and testable forms for explaining the adult learning process and further strive to show the differences in child and adult learning (Gilmore 2008).

Offshoring Paper Essay Example for Free

Offshoring Paper Essay This article talks about a trend that started as far back as the 1980’s when companies began sending many jobs abroad mainly because of cheap labor. However, that trend is quickly changing. Companies are discovering that the wage gap is narrowing and many of the disadvantages are now starting to outweigh benefits of sending jobs abroad. One of the points mentioned in the article is that wages in china have risen 10-20% in the last 10 years, whereas wages in America and Europe have remained about the same. Also, another disadvantage of send production abroad is that shipping can be very expensive. In recent years shipping costs have gotten higher such that the cost of producing elsewhere and shipping to the US is no longer as cheap as it used to be. The time factor is also a big issue. Many times transit takes as long as six weeks which makes it hard for companies to fulfill their orders in a timely manner. In conclusion, the article makes a note that a lot of companies are now rethinking their decision about going offshore. Opinion Most of the companies went offshore to save money, and I can see where they are coming from after all the whole goal of having a business is to make profits however in my opinion many of the companies did not take the time to properly analyze the other costs involved in moving jobs offshore. Many also forgot to consider how it will affect the quality of their service when it comes to shipping time and sometimes the quality of the product. I am very happy that many jobs are coming back and I think the government needs to do more to encourage the companies. They should offer tax reductions where necessary so that America will be able to compete in the global market. I also like the point the article makes, that just because companies are tending towards reducing offshoring does not mean they will be less global, infact distributing their activities more evenly around the globe will make most companies more efficient.

Brief Therapy Essay -- Counseling/Therapy

Brief therapy helps people by focusing on solutions, instead of problems. The therapist asks questions thereby facilitates the client by helping formulates solutions. The client leads the meeting by actively formulating ideas in which he/she can serve to improve the client's negative circumstances. This is contrary to cognitive therapy, which focuses on a client's cognitive processes (how he or she thinks about people/places/things). The therapist collaborates with the client to help the client develop alternative solutions. "Subsequently, a study showed solution-focused brief therapy demonstrated a small, but positive treatment effects favoring SFBT group on the outcome measures. Only the magnitude of the effect for internalizing behavior problems (such as depression, anxiety, self-concept and dignity) was statistically significant at the p ...ng. The compliments, positive affirmations, humor, positive reframing, and are all ways to handle a resistant adolescent. Parents and adolescents take an active, positive role in brief therapy by asking themselves when changes will occur. These ways of dealing with resistance in adolescents work toward the solutions kids want to break free of their emotional prisons. Works Cited Kim, J.S. History †10th Grade Short Essays Essay

What qualities in George Washington made him a good choice for commanding the revolutionary army? What were his most valuable contributions to independence? Washington would lead the Patriots to a surprising victory over Great Britain. There are many qualities that made George Washington into the great leader that he was. These qualities can be seen by the many decisions he made throughout his role as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and as President. Washington was a heroic man. As a general of the Continental Army, George Washington often rode with his troops along the front lines and brought them together during crucial battles. An example of this is before the battle of Trenton. In December of 1776, Washington personally led his troops across the icy Delaware River into New Jersey on a surprise attack on a Hessian outpost. This shows that George Washington is a brave man, as he is willing to sacrifice for his people. He also doesn’t just call orders and expect his men to comply but instead he leads them himself which shows that he is passionate about what he’s doing. Washington was also experienced when it cam e to military matters. His knowledge came from his experience because he had fought during the French Indian War and proved to be skilled in commanding troops. Washington was also a very wise leader; he knew that he could form an alliance with either Britain or France during the 1790’s. It was too dangerous to side with one or the other because of the political chaos in Europe. So instead he said that the United States should stay neutral. Although it took years for both nations to acknowledge the United States’ neutrality, Washington’s position for the country paid off. These were some of George Washington’s most valuable contributions to independence. Washington was gifted with the ability to reason things out, to examine matters thoroughly before making decisions. Washington also worked very hard. The combat of the revolutionary war began in spring 1775. Why did colonists wait until the summer of 1776 to declare independence? They had been dependent on the British government for so long that declaring independence was very controversial at that time. Some members of the continental congress actually wanted independence while others just wanted to make peace with the British, but they realized that this was not possible and even if it was they would be hung for treason. Thomas Paine then wrote an extremely influential pamphlet in 1776, which was very controversial, persuading many colonists to become independent. â€Å" It called not simply for independence, but for the creation of a new kind of political society, a republic, where power flowed from the people themselves, not from a corrupt and despotic monarch.† Many of the colonial Americans didn’t want to support independence until a year into the war. They only wanted to declare independence in 1776 because they thought that they were too far into the war to go back. Account for the widespread and enthusiastic colonial reception of Thomas Paine’s common sense. It promoted the law; the law is higher than the king. This was very popular with Americans because it promoted the idea that the king is not absolute. Most people believed that king George was the problem with the British government and this message appealed to them .It also gave arguments of why the British who were three thousand miles away and smaller should govern America. Many people felt that someone as far away as Britain should not govern America because they would not have their best interests in mind. Its very good use of imagery was used to provoke thoughts among the colonists. Many colonists who read this pamphlet felt a deep desire to support the revolutionary cause because of the imagery, it caused a lot of anger and resentment among the Americans. Colonists had debated with parliament and protested its actions since 1763. Why, then, did the declaration of independence single out king George iii as a tyrant threatening their liberties? The King was the obvious symbol of the British Empire. He was also the single most determined person in trying to prevent independence. A speech by the King in late 1775 called for the maximum level of force to stop the revolution and to punish the colonies and included language that made the rebels very angry. The King was extremely unpopular in America. George III represented England and by extension parliament and never did anything to protest those acts. The reason why they were treated badly was because the American people felt that they were powerless against them and the British evils of America. Write your definition of loyalty. Then explain why the loyalists were held in such low regard and treated with abuse during the revolutionary war. Loyalty is faithfulness or a devotion to something. Loyalty is standing up for what you believe in, when everyone sits down. Actually, during the American Revolution, Loyalists also would have considered the Rebels with low regard. Only the outcome of the war made the Loyalist cause the losing side, which were the â€Å"bad guys†. This is because history tends to brand losers of war as the villains. Fighting between Loyalists and Rebels in South Carolina was particularly bitter. We forget that not all American colonists wanted independence from Britain. A rough assessment might be that one third were for rebellion, another third were loyalists and a third were neutral and had no opinions on this matter. The Revolutionary War became particularly nasty in the southern colonies during 1780-1781.Both sides Loyalist and Rebel abused each other during the war. Many Americans and loyalists felt betrayed by the other because they had betrayed their cause and thus each side treated each other brutally. List the three most important battles of the revolutionary war. Justify your selections. Lexington Concord – The first battle of the Revolutionary War was the Battle of Concord and Lexington. On April 19th, 1775 American Militamen fought 800 British troops. The battle started in Concord. 73 British soldiers were killed and over two hundred were wounded. 49 American soldiers were killed and 39 were wounded. This basically started the American Revolution. Battle of Saratoga – The turning point of the war, British general John Burgoyne surrendered over 9000 soldiers. Americans take control of the north. Siege of Yorktown – Americans with help from the French, defeat the British. The battle of York town was the most important battle in the revolutionary war. †¨During the battle of Seratoga General Burgyne felt he had no other option but to press to albany. However the American army was blocking the route to Bemis Heights. The british made two attempts to break through the American forces, but they failed. After the second attempt they retreted to searatoga. There they were surrounded by American troops. The British had no choice but to surrender on Oct. 13, 1777. One fourth of the British forces in north America have, even though there were many battles to be fought. This insured the American independence. †¨Ã¢â‚¬ ¨ General Cornwalis arrived in Petersburg in May of 1781. After receiving instructions General Cornwalis went to Yorktown and began preparation for a naval base. General Washington moved south and, together with the French ground and naval forces surrounded the British army, forcing them to surrender and eventually ending the war †¨Many historians argue that without French aid the colonies could never have won their independence. Do you agree or disagree? Why? It is not likely. The involvement of the French provided some major victories for the Colonists. Without them the war would have lasted longer. The extremely long line of supply for England was a major short fall at that point in time. The war was also draining the monetary coffers of England. The American colonies could not have succeeded in defeating the British Empire without French aid. The colonists were not soldiers; they had no military training. The colonies had no government to pay for supplies and weapons. The colonists had no chance of success without foreign aid. Before France would ally with the colonies, they wanted to be sure that the colonists had the capability of winning the war. This was accomplished when the colonists defeated the British at the Battle of Saratoga.

Asda Marketing Plan

Abstract The following report considers the ethical position of ASDA, noting the external environment in which it operates and its marketing plan. The report finds that ASDA’s focus on low prices has somewhat disengaged it with ethics, with the business more focused on selling volume, as opposed to selling sustainable products. However, given changes in the external environment, and the rise in the discount retailers, ASDA has now been faced with higher competition. To combat this, the report suggests that ASDA looks to change its strategy to focus more on a sustainable supply-chain, potentially one which is focused on UK food and products. While this may lead to higher prices from the retailer, it could improve its image when it comes to sustainable food retailing, and so warrant higher prices to consumers, especially if the introduction of local products develops an emotional attachment for customers. Introduction The following assignment will consider ASDA, considering the external environment in which the business operates as well as its ethical consideration, determining whether the current strategy should be maintained or whether a change is needed, with the assignment then making recommendations.Company OverviewASDA is a UK-based grocery retailers owned by U.S. listed Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ASDA has been part of the UK’s ‘Big 4’ retailers in the UK grocery sector, also compromising of Tesco, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s, however it recently moved from 3rd from 2nd place on the list, being overtaken by Sainsbury’s after disappointing sales. The latest report from Kantar Worldpanel (2016) put’s ASDA’s market share at 15.3%, behind that of Sainsbury’s after suffering a 4.7% fall in sales, compared with a 0.7% fall in Sainsbury’s, and a 1.6% rise in sales at Tesco. To many UK consumers, ASDA has developed on the back of price co mpetition, with the retailer being heavily focused on being the UK’s best value supermarket. Due of its focus on price, ASDA in the past could have been seen to ignore ethical consideration, with some of the top places seen with premium retailers such as Marks & Spencer, who use their premium pricing to better consider the quality/ ethics behind their supply chain.Market EnvironmentHowever, it is this strategy which has been a downfall for the retailer, especially when put against competition from the expanding ‘discounter’s’, namely Lidl and Aldi (Ruddick, 2014). These retailers have aggressively expanded into the UK market on the back of offering low prices to consumers, with their focus on ‘prime-match’, similar of marketing conducted by ASDA against the other ‘Big 4’[1]. Given this, Aldi managed to record sales growth of 10% over the same period, beating all competition and increasing its market share to 6.2%. At the same time , Aldi also announced that it looks to take its store tally from 450 to 1,000 by 2022; Lidl also announced plans to open 40-50 new stores in the UK each year, noted by Gale (2016). This move in the market has been supported from a new business model and changing consumer habits. Discounters have benefitted from economies of scale, reducing the scale of choice to offer just one option; in turn allowing them to increase sales of that product and reduce the production costs. At the same time, these discounters have also expanded on a no-frills approach to stores, moving away from the ‘Superstore’ concept which became popular with Tesco and ASDA. This comes at a time when consumers have also looked to move away from superstores, preferring little-and-often shops to better budget. There also seems to a reduction in customer loyalty as consumers look for the best value.Marketing Situational AnalysisBuilding on the above, a SWOT analysis is shown below; Strengths  ·UK wide presence with 525 stores.  ·Still the UK’s 3rd largest grocery retailer – potential to increase share.Weaknesses  ·Recent marketing seems to have placed it in the ‘discount’ category when it comes to grocery stores – potentially restricting sales of some of its higher-value items. Opportunities  ·Recent improvement in UK economic fundamentals – coupled with rising wages may increase consumer disposable income.  ·Fall in ?GBP has put some spotlight on UK food/ products to escape price rises.Threats  ·Competition remains the biggest threat to ASDA, especially with discounters such as Lidl/ Aldi quickly expanding their store network, as well as expanding their marketing activities, with a focus on value. Ultimately, the analysis is suggesting that the main weakness in marketing lies within this continued focus solely on the price. This has come under pressure given new entrants into the market, with the discounters of Lidl/ Aldi coming into the market with business models which mean they can potentially undercut ASDA on prices. This is the main threat to the business, with ASDA still seeing a fall in sales, even with the recent buoyancy in UK retail sales. However, there are potential opportunities for ASDA to diversify, expanding its marketing to cover issues within sustainability and UK produce; improving the ethics when it comes to food sourcing, and issues such as food security and locality[2].ObjectivesIn the past, ASDA’S objectives have been focused on customer value, however given an expanding ‘discount’ sector, the retailer is now under more pricing pressure to maintain customers. With this, there is the expectation that the retailer may need to diversify, essentially look to attract more customers back to its stores. The objective for ASDA is to tempt customer’s back into its store; or tempt new customers back. Given continued expansion of Lidl/ Aldi, it could be expected that the new strategy will need to focus more on attracting new customers, be it from retailers such as Sainsbury’s.Strategy & SegmentationTo support its strategy, ASDA will look to segment the market into different consumers, based on demographics, location, income etc. Given marketing campaigns undertaken by the business, it would appear that ASDA has segmented the market; looking to appeal to those families of lower incomes. Its focus on being the cheapest is indicative of its primary target market. Because of this, the business has become somewhat specialised on this business model, a focus on low-cost, which in turn could impede quality. It has positioned itself in the low-cost end of the market, however given new entrants and intensified competi tion, is now finding it hard to compete and develop with new competition (Peter, 2011)[3]. The business model helped ASDA over the years of recession given constrained consumer income, however as economic conditions have improved, consumers have essentially traded-up. This has provided support to other retailers such as Sainsbury’s, and Waitrose which position themselves at the higher end of the market. With this, ASDA may feel that its business is currently positioned to narrow, targeting a consumer base which is shrinking which competition is increasing. There are two ways in which the retailer can broaden its consumer base, either through changes to marketing which will target a new market, or by differentiating the product to appeal to a broader base of consumers, noted in Armstrong et al (2012)[4].Tactics & ActionGiven the above, the main tactic for ASDA s to re-position itself in the market, remove this constant focus on price and look to focus more on ethical issues such as sustainability, which in turn may suggest quality. To do this, the retailer has a number of actions: ASDA will move to focus on local; putting its focus on supplying more UK produce in-stores, having dedicated aisles in superstores to local producers. The benefit here will not only be from higher sales of these goods, put also of the positive PR which could arise through supporting local farmers, and local communities. This is essentially classed as differentiation; the retailer will be introducing new products to do so. ASDA will also look to introduce convenience aisles into superstores. This will be seen as segmentation,[5] looking to attract a new set of customers to its stores who may have previously left as they prefer to do ‘little-and-often’ shops. This can be marketed by ASDA to target these specific customers.BudgetThis section will now discuss the budget for such a change in strategy. The main costs to the business will be seen as the marketing. For instance, when it comes to the ‘convenience aisle’, it could be noted that the infrastructure is a lready there; the stores will simply have to shuffle around stock to create the new aisle. When it comes to introducing the new products, the costs may be more down to developing the local links, with the suppliers themselves bearing the costs associated with producing the goods. Rather than a major financial cost, the introduction of more local products may be more time consuming for ASDA, given that they will need to ensure that the new products are in-keeping with the goals of the business, both in terms of pricing and quality (Ferrell, 2012)[6]. Marketing will be done through all ’traditional’ channels given the mass-market appeal of ASDA and the fierce competition within the UK grocery sector. While this would involve a higher cost than say digital marketing opportunities, it would be hoped that print advertisements and TV commercial will draw more attention, and so inform more customers. However, digital marketing could also be used, especially when it comes to advertisements through social media, and targeted banner ads which can be used online.ControlControl remains an important consideration, both in terms of ensuring a level of consistency in the marketing message as well as also monitoring the return on investment (hereafter ROI). When it comes to consistency, while marketing could change to reflect changes in the marketplace, the business must look to maintain its ‘core’ message. For instance, while the focus on new marketing campaigns may be on local produce, the core message remains with the slogan ‘Save Money, Live Better’. Too much of change may lead to current customers becoming detached with the business and its values. Control will also come with ROI. Essentially, all businesses need to ensure that their marketing spend is generating business. New, digital marketing allows businesses to track this, with businesses able to use tools such as Google Analytics to view web traffic etc. (Chaffey, 2012)[7]. Traditional marketing may be harder to manage in terms of ROI, given that it is harder to distinguish how a certain poster/ TV commercial may have driven demand. However, if ASDA move forward with a unified campaign, so changing all marketing to reflect a single message, then the business can understand the potential ROI of the campaign. Recommendation/ Conclusion To conclude, ASDA has in the past focused its marketing plan on price, looking to drive consumption through low prices. This is itself would not be considered ‘ethical consumerism’, given that some of the lower prices products could be viewed as a damage to the environment. However, this strategy has now placed ASDA into a market segment which is seeing more competition, at a time when the size of the market may be slowing, given improving economics in the UK[8]. To combat this, ASDA has an opportunity to diversify its product range into a more ‘premium’ space; be it the expansion of their ‘Extra Special’ range, or through the introduction of more local products and brands (Perreault, 2010)[9]. The focus on UK produce could provide ASDA with a ‘Unique Selling Point’; which could allow the business to justify higher pricing, noted in Fifield (2012)[10]. This may also improve the organisations ethical position as it suggests that ASDA is considering sustainability in its wider supply-chain; given that more food is local, opposed to international, reducing the ‘distance’ of the supply chain, potentially being seen as more environmentally friendly. However, at the same time, the retailer must be wary that any change to its pricing may impact on its core customers. In the end, this may further impact on market share, however this is seen as a potential risk of an opportunity. The recommendation for ASDA is that is moves forward with a change in marketing, highlighting developments in both local sourcing as well as convenience. However, ASDA must look to control this movement, and potentially monitor the opportunity. This could be done through monitoring sales of, as well as monitoring footfall into stores. An Introduction to Irregular Verbs - Proofeds Writing Tips

An Introduction to Irregular Verbs - Proofeds Writing Tips An Introduction to Irregular Verbs Most verbs do exactly what you’d expect them to when you change their tense. But this isn’t always the case. Some verbs are grammatical rebels. And when these terms pop up, it is easy for errors to creep into your written work. Join us, then, for a quick look at how to handle irregular verbs. Regular Verbs Before we look at irregular verbs, though, we should define what a regular verb is first. These terms are easy to understand because their simple past tense and past participle forms all end with the letters â€Å"-ed.† For instance, the verb â€Å"sail† becomes â€Å"sailed.† Other examples include: Base Verb Form Simple Past Tense Past Participle Bake Baked Baked Hurry Hurried Hurried Kick Kicked Kicked Lower Lowered Lowered Play Played Played As shown above with â€Å"hurry† and â€Å"hurried,† the spelling of certain words changes slightly when forming past tense forms of a regular verb. But even these terms end â€Å"-ed.† Importantly, too, the simple past tense and past participle forms are the same in each case for regular verbs. Irregular Verbs An â€Å"irregular verb† is any verb that doesn’t follow the rules above when forming simple past tense and past participle forms. As a result, these words don’t end with â€Å"-ed† like regular verbs. For example, the simple present tense verb â€Å"break† does not become â€Å"breaked,† but actually changes into â€Å"broke† (simple past tense) and â€Å"broken† (past participle). Other examples include: Base Verb Form Simple Past Tense Past Participle Cut Cut Cut Drink Drank Drunk Sit Sat Sat Think Thought Thought Write Wrote Written As you can see, there is no real pattern to how irregular verbs behave: Some change just one letter in different forms (e.g., drink drank drunk) Others change more significantly (e.g., think thought) In some cases, the simple past tense and past participle forms are the same Some words use a different term for past tense and past participle forms Others don’t change from the base form in either case (e.g., cut) It can, therefore, become a bit confusing! Our advice is to watch out for irregular verbs when reading and learn how they’re used. Checking unusual terms in a dictionary and having your work proofread to correct any verb-based errors is also a good idea. To Be or Not to Be? No, we’re not quoting Shakespeare. We’re just highlighting how tricky the verb â€Å"be† can be. This little word is one of the sneakiest around, with a variety of forms depending on how it is used. Verb Forms First Person Second Person Third Person Singular Plural Singular Plural Singular Plural Present Tense Am Are Are Is Are Past Tense Was Were Were Was Were Present Participle Being Past Participle Been This may make â€Å"be† the most irregular verb around! And while it is easy to master the basic forms with practice, you should still be careful when using the subjunctive mood.

Boys Behavior in The Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Boys' Behavior in The Lord of the Flies by William Golding Having parents that are strict on you could be a good or a bad thing. When it comes to you not being around them it shows how you’d act if they weren’t around. In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the boys behavior is affected by the way they were raised.reasoning, Piggy’s aunt led him to being proper, Ralph’s dad is a commander in the navy, and Jack likely had a poor relationship with his parents. For Piggy growing up with a proper and respectful surrounding it would be good for him to be alone because he would know how to act with no parents around. Knowing that there are no girls on the island and Piggy lived with his aunt he’d be the only female voice of the group. Piggy likes to be Ralph’s advisor knowing that he cannot lead the group on himself. Piggy believes that holding the couch gives him the right to be heard. Piggy also likes to keep life scientific. Ralph represents leadership and a decency of intelligence. Shows obvious common since. Ralph is the one who makes the meeting place, the fire, and the huts. Ralph was the only elected leader for the boys.Ralph starts to lose his power of organized such as when he struggles to make an agenda for a meeting. Ralph was the only one to realize that Simon’s death was a murder. Since his dad was a commander in the navy Ralph will know all these things because he gets it from a father figure. For Jack, Jack gave a evil and violent type of character based on the fact that he had a dark side in survival. Jack came with a mindset that he would control eachand one of the boys and run them over when quite frankly he didn’t. He wanted to make rules and punish people who didn’t want to follow them even tho eventually he starts breaking his own rules he creates. Jack wants to rule the group other than just working with Ralph then being against Ralph. Jack doesn’t even follow the conch rule, but uses it in advantage when he has the power to do so. Jack wasn’t really good with his parents he got sent to military school and wasn’t really doing so great. All in all, when you are raised correctly or mutually you will conquer a lot in life. When you choose to not listen to what your parents tell you or make you do it can reach based on how you perform in public. If your parents are strict on you its better for you because when your not around them it will show what they meant to you when they told you to do this or that. Could even be when adults, adults parent just how they are raised or though to do so. This is how you would know if kids and or adults react in certain situations.

Obamacare Laid Bare - Charles Krauthammer Essay

Obamacare Laid Bare - Charles Krauthammer - Essay Example Obamacare Laid Bare - Charles Krauthammer Apparently, the enforcement of Obamacare is a national issue that stimulates a wide range of political debate given that such law is perceived as a means of transporting enormous amount of wealth under the present American political system. Despite this perception, US government officials cannot fully express the benefits associated with the health care policy so they could avoid the risk of losing in the elections. As such is the case, they merely implement the law through deception being carried out in the form of hidden taxes, mandates, and penalties that generate excessive payments. Although Obamacare seems to be beneficial since it imposes an affordable health care program, the vested interests of government officials will only heighten the clamor of the citizens to eliminate the cancellation of the law. It seems that majority of the Americans considered the legislation as unfavorable knowing that they will only face an additional burden of financial responsibilities. This is pa rticularly unfair for those Americans who have low income considering that most political leaders support the law only to exercise political control and influence of governing their nation’s wealth. The disadvantages of Obamacare only outweigh its advantages as the cancelled policies are more politically-driven in falsifying the essential nature of implementing the law. Certainly, the insurance buyers would later on realize that their taxes and premiums have been raised.
